INVEST IN OUR HERITAGE
Through revitalization and only with your help,
Mayne Island's past and future will find convergence, now!
We are thrilled to report that Phase 1 has been achieved and we have purchased the property and building. We will continue raising funds for the upgrades to the building and the property.
The outcome will be a dramatic improvement to:
  • the museum's archival ability
  • the museum's outdoor curation and grounds
  • accommodate people of all needs
  • the community Thrift Shop services
  • washroom and septic facilities
  • general parking facilities
Upon completion Mayne Island will have:
An overall, larger and greatly improved heritage site, capable of telling the story of this land and its people, in a more attractive and interactive space.

Mayne Island Museum

The historic Plumper Pass Gaol, constructed in 1896, houses the collection of Mayne Island historical artifacts.  The adjacent Dalton Deacon Barn houses the larger pieces of farm machinery and appliances that have been donated to the Museum.  We need to place paper documents, photographs and other soft items in a secure, heated facility to preserve them for future viewing and reference.  Our hope is that new Mayne Islanders will be able to access this material as they make their own history on Mayne Island.
Thrift Shop and more…

The Thrift Shop is an iconic community asset on the Island.
Its operations will be moved to the new site and provide a better work environment for volunteers as well as more open space for the display of goods.  The acquired building will also be renovated to house our archival material for security and accessibility for potential users. As well, the upgrades would see mobility access to public washrooms and increased parking

Fundraising Target - $450,000 by April 2022
  • To purchase property adjacent to Thrift Shop
  • Pay fees and taxes related to the purchase
  • Renovate acquired building and grounds
First steps in realizing this goal are:
  • To consolidate the ownership of the lands at our heritage centre for community use and seek the required zoning
  • To provide a new and more efficient home for our community Thrift Shop
  • To provide a secure and protected space for our more perishable community archives (books, papers and photographs)
Our long-term goal for the Mayne Island Heritage Initiative is to expand our heritage core site, improve accessibility and to create new spaces to display and tell our story.
